Bengaluru has become the first Indian city to welcome the renowned Japanese restaurant chain Tenya, which has debuted its new outlet under the name Hachi by Tenya. Established in 1989 in the Yaesu underground shopping mall at Tokyo Station, Tenya has grown to operate 146 restaurants across Japan and internationally. The Bengaluru outpost marks the brand's continued global expansion.
Located within BLR Brewing Co. in Seetharam Palya, Whitefield, Hachi by Tenya is easily accessible via the city’s Purple Line metro, with Seetharam Palya Metro Station just a short walk away. The restaurant has been set up as a 40-seater casual dining space, including 12 seats at an open kitchen chef’s counter, offering diners a direct view of the cooking process.
The culinary offerings include Tenya’s signature tempura rice bowls (tendon), ramen varieties, and hand-rolled sushi. The menu has been adapted to suit both Japanese and Indian preferences, with key seasonings imported from Japan while most ingredients are locally sourced. Ahead of the launch, the culinary team conducted research by visiting established Japanese restaurants in the city.
The menu highlights traditional preparations such as agedashi tofu, hand sushi rolls, and a selection of tempura made with seasonal vegetables like sweet potato, bell pepper, okra, coriander, and mushrooms. Tempura, a historically premium dish introduced to Japan in the 16th century, is made accessible at Hachi by Tenya through proprietary in-house cooking systems that replicate the brand’s signature light and crispy texture.
Ramen offerings include Tantanmen with sesame broth and chilli oil, alongside other options like shoyu, paitan, and spicy miso corn butter ramen. The dessert menu features tempura ice cream. While the menu is currently limited, plans are in place to expand offerings in the coming months.
