Six Brothers Mahura is being introduced into India’s duty-free travel retail channel by South Seas Distilleries, making it the first Mahua-based spirit to enter this segment. A traditional forest-based distilling category is being placed before international travellers through a premium retail environment. The launch is being positioned as an important moment for Indian-origin spirits.
Mahua is derived from the flower of Madhuca longifolia, which has been used in tribal regions across India for traditional spirit production. South Seas Distilleries has stated that the launch reflects an effort to bring indigenous ingredients into the premium global spirits market. The ingredient has long held cultural and economic importance in tribal communities.
The duty-free portfolio includes Six Brothers Mahura along with Crazy Cock Indian Single Malt Whisky offerings. South Seas Distilleries has included Rare, Dhua, and the Madhuca heritage edition in the channel. The Madhuca edition has been created using mahua-seasoned casks to add floral characteristics to the whisky profile.
Hamavand Chinoy, Chief Operating Officer, South Seas Distilleries, said, “The entry of Mahua into duty-free retail is a cultural milestone for India.” The company has stated that the launch will help showcase Indian craftsmanship to global travellers. The move also gives Mahua-based spirits formal visibility in an international retail setting.
Mahua sourcing is connected with rural economies because harvesting is usually carried out through community-based forest collection. South Seas Distilleries has linked the category with sustainability and local livelihood support. As global consumers look for origin-led spirits and newer flavour profiles, Mahua-based products are being positioned as a distinctive Indian offering in premium alcohol retail.
